Tale of The Sans Serif

Kinetic Typography, 2020

The task for this project is to create a time based media expression on the concept of revolution. For this film, I interpreted the word revolution using the definition, “a forcible overthrow of a social order/government."

I became interested in the idea that “sans serif” literally means “without serif.” With this in mind, I created an animation about the struggle between two groups of typefaces, the Serif and Sans Serif. In the story, the traditionally elite typefaces – the Serif – ruled the world and oppressed the Sans Serif. The Sans Serif, finally reaching a breaking point, revolts against the Serif and demanded freedom and equality.

Thanks to many iterations and class feedback, typography in the real world better influenced the story and made it make more sense. Like in the real world, sans serif is dominant but has not replaced serifs entirely. The two work together and have even become complementary to one another. And thus, one is not better than the other, but are equals.
